There are seven main climbing routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. These routes differ not only in length, cost and scenery; they also have different difficulty levels and different success rates. Choosing your Kilimanjaro climbing route is one of the most important decisions you will make. There is no single best route to climb Kilimanjaro.
Each route has its advantages and disadvantages. The Marangu Route is most popular with beginner hikers as it is one of the easiest, but also busier than some of the other routes. The Umbwe route is one of the most difficult and should not be attempted if you have no climbing experience.
When choosing the Kilimanjaro route, there are several factors to consider. The first of these is acclimatization – some routes climb steeper, making altitude sickness a greater risk. Next is the difficulty of the route, especially on peak nights – the success rate suggests this. Accommodation options and the busyness of the route must be taken into account. Finally, how scenic is the route – decent views really add to the hiking experience.
We have provided a detailed description of Kilimanjaro routes to help you make the right decision for your trip.
In the case of altitude sickness, it is important to seek advice from your own doctor before deciding on medication, as it has side effects. It’s a good idea to make this decision well before you set foot on the mountain, as the medication has an adjustment period that can throw off the whole trip…trust me, it’s not a fun experience!
The risk of altitude sickness can be greatly reduced with proper acclimatization methods and time frames. One simple preventive measure is to avoid tour operators who offer shorter trips to Kilimanjaro – they won’t have enough time to acclimatise.
